Another Weekend in America
Photographed over the 2019 Labor Day weekend at the Michigan State Fair, "Another Weekend in America" presents both a literal depiction of a quintessential American event, and a metaphoric nod to American culture during a dichotomous, carnival-esque election season. A cacophony of color, sounds and attendees "taken along for a ride," the scenes are at once alive, absurd, reflective, energetic and humorous.
At the same time, the work is punctuated by portraits of fair-goers who confront us with their humanity, and possibly their very "American-ness." They make eye contact with us, challenging us with a certain tenderness, strength and vulnerability; reminding us that in this swirling political season, it is our own humanity that is at stake.
