LAST ICE
Rick Genow lives on Saginaw Bay on property he bought from his grandmother when he was just 18. His grandparents were commercial fishermen and hunters on the Bay, and Rick has inherited a love of both outdoor sports, which he has enjoyed his entire life. In the winter he accesses the ice from his own yard, fishing for everything from walleye to perch. Genow has created a sportsman den in his home, which displays everything from deer and coyote he's killed to a 32-inch walleye he caught to antique wooden tip-ups from the 1920s, all the fishing licenses he's had since he was a child, a net his grandfather used to catch fish and multiple vintage lures. "Back in the day, when you used to need to have ice, my grandfather used to cut ice from the Bay and send it down," he says. "Everything changes. Back in the day, we didn't have no water and all of the sudden it came back. To me it's just a natural thing that comes back."
