On January 4, Lake Erie was 59.38 percent covered in ice, according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory data. "In an average year, it takes until Feb. 7 to be 60 percent covered in ice, according to data from the Great Lakes lab. On average, about 22 percent of the lake is usually covered in ice by Jan. 5. Last year, it was just 4 percent. And, in 2016, there was less than 1 percent ice on the lake."
