Love Letters to Belle Isle
Love Letters to Belle Isle is a testament to the power of parks on the human spirit. At the heart of the project is an assortment of anonymous love notes Amy collected from a wire-bound notebook she placed in a wooden box on a trail in Belle Isle, the island park at the heart of Detroit. The instructions were simple: “Write a love letter to Belle Isle.”
Over the course of a year (2022-2023) Amy collected 760 notes. She paired these notes with photos from more than 10 years of exploration of the park. From tales of first love to expressions of adventure, gratitude and solace, these personal notes illuminate the unique role parks have in our lives – to heal, to comfort and to create abundant joy.
